a shelter for a path | trienal oslo 2016

memorial do projeto
Rich in meaning, walking is given esthetic dimension in the landscape, as expressed in the work of Francesco Careri’s Walkscape, in which the course can be interpreted as the act of traversing, the line that crosses space and the narrative of the crossed space. These three interpretations on the pathway explicit thee basic perceptions, common to every human being: time, space and movement.
The sequence of departures that happen during a course – between leaving and arriving – transform the final objective into an abstraction. The passage is an act that ends in itself. The pause is inherent to the pathway. It is about the chosen moment to take a breath and maybe give a new meaning to the next steps. Accepting the pathway as it is and the proposed pauses, makes one’s passage constant.
The proposal consists in incorporating one of the existing pathways of Oslo’s central park, Torshovdalen, that borders the Trondheimsveien expressway and is also adjacent to the Torshov Transittmottak. A 99 meters long shading structure covers a paved passage that crosses the valley, connecting two different topographical heights. The already flattened and paved pathway offers points where it is possible to overlook the Oslo bay area, which can be expressed as a materialization of a route already inserted into the landscape. This covering, that protects man and creates a haven, is also an area of physical and spiritual protection.
In addition to the pathway, the concept of pausing is installed, represented by hammocks and benches. Both invite one to relax and reflect. We have as an example, Lucio Costa’s intervention in the 1964 Triennale di Millano, where he subverted the dynamics of the exhibit and proposed a space to be idle in, riposatevi [relax, rest].
Building a course and building throughout the course
The city is made of singularities. The ones that delight us with richness and diversity, but also with opposition and conflict. How to articulate these in a single shared space, respecting inherent differences and establishing a space of coexistence?
The urban space is a place for spontaneous exchange and collective identity and must be understood as a part of the Commom [concept developed by Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri], that just like nature, it belongs to everyone. More than understanding the difference between public and private, we must understand the spaces as shared, existing in between a range of interests and conflicts. It is desired that the structure serve as a stimulant by triggering several activities. The space is permeable and open to many activities, which include the ones supported by Transittmottak as well as the ones organized by local groups.
Far from exoticism, the structure proposes to create a co-existence and exchange space, generating a silent debate and bringing this issue to the urban realm. The chosen constructive system is a modular solutions developed for the industry worldwide. It is a self-explanatory system that is easy to be applied and understood. Its versatility and simplicity can adapt to multiple architectural situations.
The intervention is thought of in repetitive modules that adapt to the natural terrain. Its characteristics allow for a collective way of construction that will be important in order to foster civil participation in the construction of the pavilion. A collective exercise of building, belonging and rhythm.
